Dick Palmer, Principal City College NorwichHi to all, my name's Dick Palmer and I'm the Principal of City College Norwich - one of the very best FE and HE colleges in the country. This Blog is my space to let you know about things going on in the College, in Norwich and in the wider educational community. As always, I welcome your comments so please let me know what you think.

End of term

Well another acdemic year alost over and what a year for City College Norwich. We won another National Training Award, had a range of students get into the regional and national finals of the WorldSkills competitions and our Student Union was runner up in the National Union of Students Award for FE Union of the Year - well done to all of them. But the highlight has to be winning the Queen's Anniversary Trust Award for Higher and Further Education.

Here's to your health!

Good morning, chums! How are you feeling today? Oh me? Thank you for asking. Well I'm hunky dory and pretty hooperzootic about life. The sun is shining, it's getting lighter in the evenings and Doctor Who is back on telly so all is well. Oh and my goodness, weren't the Smilers terrifying?

It's BIG!

So have you done it yet?

Don’t frown and look blankly at me. You know exactly what I mean! Oh yes you do. No, you can’t simply shake your head and walk off, I haven’t finished yet.

Have you done the BIG COLLEGE HEALTH CHECK?

Yes? Marvellous stuff.

No? Oooooh… Very naughty.

What am I barking on about this time? Get to the back of the class - shoo!

EMA is safe for the short term.....

Schools Minister Iain Wright relieved the fears of many this week by confirming that the Education Maintenance Allowance would be continued after the school leaving age is raised to 18. MPs are meeting in Westminster this week to discuss the future for EMA payments. It is four years since the scheme was first introduced; during which time it has not been without controversy or criticism.

HE Funding Cuts

The government has made much of the need to aim higher, introducing a target of 50pc of people going into higher education. The justification has always been that Britain needs better educated employees with higher skill levels, in order to trade blows with our rival nations on an increasingly competitive world stage.

Another year another....

The start of the last academic year was not pleasant for most due to the EMA debacle. Millions of students up and down the country were affected along with their families as a result of incompetence by the administering organisation Liberata. This was not a pleasant time it eventually lead to some students having to quit courses as they could not afford to come. This was fortunately not the case at City College; although our students were affected, luckily the College went the extra mile by loaning students the money they were not receiving.

Google forms revisited

We recently hosted our staff learning day, and it was another excellent opportunity to use the power of Google forms(part of Google docs),both for collecting what sessions people wanted to sign up for, and also to allow them to evaluate the sessions afterwards. The evaluation replaced a paper-heavy optical mark form, so it also helped to meet the green agenda. What I really like about Google forms is that they are easy to set up, easy to distribute and embed,so make it very easy to reach your audience.
