Summary: 

This course is for people who are interested in working within the Performing Arts and Creative Industries in the technical and design areas.

It is a vocational, work-related course.  You learn by completing projects and some written assignments that are completed only while working on realistic workplace situations, to enable you to gain the experience needed to pursue a career in the Production Industries.

BTEC Extended Nationals are equivalent to three A levels which means when you have finished the course you can choose whether to get a job straight away or go into higher education first.  The course is equally suitable for school leavers and mature students.

Our state of the art facilities include a 200 seated theatre with an excellent lighting and sound system and rehearsal space.

Entry Requirements: 

You will normally need to have one of the following: 

  • BTEC First Diploma
  • Four GCSEs at grades A-C,
  • GNVQ in a related subject,
  • Appropriate work experience. 

You will also be expected to attend an interview workshop day, where you will be required to participate in practical activities, prepare and perform a short presentation and undertake a short interview. 
Dates and venue for the interview workshops will be given to you by the Admissions team once you have made your application.

Assessment: 

All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is then awarded.

Assessment is on-going throughout the course, and requires you to complete projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations.  Assessment activities that you may undertake include: participating in practical workshops, rehearsals, performances, writing essays, giving presentations, discussing work.

Academic Progression: 

BTEC National Diplomas are valued by colleges, vocational schools and universities.

The world is really your oyster in production; courses range from Sound Engineering, Lighting Design and Control, Costume Design, Scenic Construction, Stage and Production Management, Arts Administration, Puppetry and Props.

All students take the five core units:

  • Production Workshop
  • Performing Arts Business
  • The Historical Context of Performance
  • Production Arts Planning
  • Production for Theatre Performance

 You will also take 12 other units which include. 

  • Theatre Front of House Operations
  • Arts Administration
  • Assistant Stage Management
  • Deputy Stage Management
  • Stage Management
  • Stage Technology Installation
  • Stage Technology Operations
  • Stage Lighting Operations
  • Stage Sound Operations
  • Live sound for the Stage
  • Working Freelance in the Performing and Production Arts
  • Legal Aspects in Performing and Production Arts

Days and times of attendance:
You will spend approximately eighteen hours a week at College, and at The Garage with your tutors having taught sessions.  You will be expected to match this time with your own rehearsal, preparation, research and home work per week.  During Production periods you will be expected to spend more time at the College in order to undertake and keep to rehearsal and planning schedules. 

Trips:
It is essential as a Production student that you see as much theatre as you can; therefore we arrange regular trips to the theatres across the county to see a variety of work produced. Termly outings include a range of theatre shows, professional workshops and workplace related activities.  
Annual trips are organised for students.  Past trips have included New York, Italy, Paris and London.
