Summary: 

The health and fitness sector is one of the largest and most diverse in terms of employment in the United Kingdom. This foundation degree is aimed at students who work or want to work in one of the many areas of the sport, health and fitness sector, combining academic study with vocational experience.

This is the ideal course if you want to work in health and sports clubs, teach physical education or work alongside physiotherapists.

The Foundation Degree in Sport, Health and Fitness has been designed to provide students with a thorough grounding in key areas of sport, coaching, health and fitness, including the physiological, psychological and social aspects of these disciplines. A key element of the course is its strong vocational aspect and students are frequently required to place their academic and work based learning into context.

Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of a UEA Foundation Degree and provides students with the opportunity of spending a further year completing a BSc (Hons) Applied Sport , Health and Exercise which is also a UEA Degree. 

The course is available as a full-time or part-time mode of study.

Entry Requirements: 

Normally at least one A Level in a science-based subject with four appropriate supporting GCSE passes (A-C), including at least one Science and Maths.
National Certificate, GNVQ Advanced, AVCE, or an accredited access certificate.

We welcome applications from mature (over 21) students who have relevant experience or alternative qualifications.

Core Skills: 

You will study a mix of core and programme-specific modules - a total of 18.  Core modules include Higher Learning Skills; The Individual in the Sports; Health and Education Sector; Work-based Learning 1 and 2; Advanced Higher Learning Skills. Specialist subjects include coaching skills, exercise physiology, biological sciences, nutrition.

Assessment: 

Your work will be assessed through a mix of written assignments, both individually and as part of a group, learning diaries/logs, presentations, time-constrained exercises, both open and closed book, and conventional essays.

Academic Progression: 

This programme provides a solid route for progression to an honours degree.  FdA graduates may also progress to the BSc Sports Science (currently being validated) at UEA or to the BA (Hons) Professional Studies at UEA or Top Up Year in BA Hons Physical Education and BA Hons Sports Development at UEA, developed in partnership with City College.
