College Governors

The Corporation of City College Norwich consists of up to 20 Governor members. The College Governors serve in a voluntary capacity for initially a period of four years although often go on to be involved with the college over a much longer period. Governors elect a Chairman and Vice Chairman from amongst their number. In addition to attending Corporation Board meetings, Governors also serve as members of one or two of the committees which undertake the detailed work of the Corporation during the year.

The Governors are appointed by Corporation, following a nomination process, Additionally, the Principal serves as a Governor, and a small number of Governors are elected by staff (two) and students (three) at the College.

The current Governors of the College are:

Bryony Falkus (Chairman)

Bryony is a retired partner of Mills & Reeve (Solicitors) and joined the Corporation in October 1995. She is currently Chair of the Corporation as well as a number of other Corporation committees.

Bryony has served for a number of years as Vice-Chairman and in May 2004 and following the retirement of the serving Chairman she was elected to this office.

Sandy Sankar (Vice Chairman)

Sandy joined the Board in May 2004. He has spent his career in health work, initially in nursing and then moving onto nursing education and management. He has held a number of senior appointments and currently works on a freelance basis. He is a Non Executive Director of the Southern Norfolk Primary Care NHS Trust and a JP.

His health work skills and connections will be a valuable asset to the Board as the College increases its links with both the medical School at UEA and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital

In March 2007 Sandy was elected as the Vice Chairman of the Corporation.

Dick Palmer

Dick is the Principal of City College and took up his appointment on the 1st January 2003. Previously he was Deputy Principal at Lewisham College, London. He cares passionately about Further Education and its development and will be working to enhance all of the services provided by City College, Norwich and ensuring it is amongst the leading colleges of Further and Higher education in the UK.

Dick is a committed family man with two young daughters and a son. He sits as a member of the Curriculum & Quality, Finance, Search and Staffing committees.

Barbara Abrahams (Staff Governor)

I am a Programme Manager in the Hotel School and over the last 20 years I have been a Sessional lecturer, a proportional lecturer and Senior Tutor with responsibility for staff mentoring.

My teaching experience relates to a spectrum of abilities and ages. My particular interest is the design and delivery of accredited programmes for students with physical and/or learning disabilities.

I am pleased to have the opportunity to represent the views of my colleagues.

Matthew Colmer

As Associate Director of Finance for Norfolk Community Health and Care, I am able to bring my experience of finance, strategy development and governance from the NHS to support the college achieve its objectives

Richard Fairman

As a qualified Accountant and given the financial changes facing education, I am pleased to be joining the College Corporation. I hope my skills will assist them in not only meeting the immediate challenges but also in developing the College as a leading 21st century institution.

Susan Flint (Staff Governor)

Deputy Facilities Manager

I enjoy being part of City College and I care about students, staff and the future of the College. As a Governor I hope to be able to share my aspirations and concerns in order to influence changes as well as acting as a voice for others.

Arron Gatley (FE Student Governor)

As a representative of both students and Further Education within the College, I look forward to being able to influence matters and input into those that directly effect students.

Barbara Hacker

Barbara was until recently a Norfolk County Councillor and is a former Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group. She has varied interests including active involvement in the arts via the Norfolk Arts Steering group and Local Government Arts Forum executive. Currently she chairs the Estates committee and is a member of the Finance & Resources committee.

Anne Hillary

I have over 20 years experience in careers guidance, working with a range of clients including school leavers, career changers and graduates, as well as nearly 10 years teaching secondary school English. As Director of Careers & Employability at the University of East Anglia and member of Norfolk's Employment and Skills Board I hope to assist with the development of the College to ensure that all students have opportunities to realise their potential.

Charlie Hall

I am pleased to be involved as a Governor. My experience with Norfolk Constabulary and previously as a school governor will, I hope, contribute to the College’s progression to even greater excellence in the future.

Tom Hollick (Student Governor - SU President)

As the President of the Students' Union and a Student Governor it is my duty to make sure that Corporation listens and acts upon the wishes of the Student Voice and that the concerns of Students are always at the heart of any discussion.

Chris Maw

Chris, a Chartered Accountant, is the leader of the assurance practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Norwich, having previously worked in London for some years. In this role, he provides professional services to many of the region's biggest companies and employers as well as undertaking a recruitment and career counselling role for his firm. He is active in the business life of the city and county, participating in, amongst other things, the Forum Trust, the Economic Round Table and the Shaping the Future initiative.

Chris is pleased to have been asked to join the Board as he is keenly interested in the importance of good training, both in terms of developing the individual and supporting the continued growth of the local economy.

Alison Monsey

I joined Aviva in June 2005 as the HR Business Partner supporting the General Insurance Business. Married with a young daughter I am also studying towards a degree in Psychotherapy and Integrative Counselling Skills.  Aviva has strong links with the College and I am delighted to be their representative. I hope my skills will be of benefit to the College and the community it serves.

Melvyn Roffe

In my role as Principal of Wymondham College I hope my experience of working in secondary education will assist the College, particularly in its partnership work with different schools.

Elliot Page (HE Student Governor)

I hope to bring a strong and progressive voice to the College Corporation, with the aim to represent Higher Education students through the hardened economic climate.

Bernard Scully

I have over 30 years experience in senior Human Resource positions in both Local Government and the NHS with over 16 years spent as a director of several NHS Trusts. I hope to apply my skills and experience in assisting with the development and running of the College.

Zak Virgin

Zak is an associate at law firm Mills & Reeve in Norwich specialising in corporate and banking law and is also involved in the recruitment and training of solicitors at the firm. He was born and educated in Norfolk and is committed to using his legal knowledge to help the College develop and implement its business and educational goals. He is keen to see the College continue to provide high quality learning opportunities and become increasingly recognised as a centre of educational excellence for the benefit of both the region's learners and its employers. He sits on the Finance and Resources committee.
