Student Triumphs in Norwich Photography Competition

National Diploma in Photography student Maisie East has won the under 25s category of Norwich Heritage Economic and Regeneration Trust’s My Heritage, My Norwich photography competition.

Maise’s winning entry will appear alongside other photographs from around the county, including entries from several of Maisie’s classmates who were also shortlisted, in a public exhibition that will tour several Norfolk venues in 2011.

Maisie’s winning photo ‘Out of Time’ features the Out of Time record store on Magdalen Street with an interesting twist on a 19th century portrait of a shopkeeper.  The competition judges praised the “timeless quality” of her work. Maise’s prize includes a £150 Chapelfield gift card, a trophy and tickets to the launch event of the exhibition.

Fellow photography students Isobel Booth and Kerry Heaney were also been named runners in the competition.  A number of other students from the course entered the competition and were shortlisted, and their work will also be featured in the exhibition. The students were encouraged to enter the competition by photography lecturer Jon Clark who saw the competition as a perfect opportunity to get the students working on a live brief.

Maisie East, 16, from Reepham said: “I wasn’t expecting to win the competition at all and it feels really good to have won. The chance to work on a live brief was a good experience and I hope that by winning the competition my work will get noticed.”

Jon Clark, Photography Course Leader, City College Norwich said: “I am really proud of the students, it has been a brilliant opportunity for them to gain valuable experience by working on a live brief. It also gives them the chance to show off their work to the local public at the upcoming exhibitions.”

You can see the winning and shortlisted entries at the public exhibition in The Forum from February 27 to March 10 and at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse from April 11 to 17, with further venues to be announced.
